First off the 3/4 book has nothing to do with rebuilding 10 or 12 bolt differentials ! it's a lil ridicules how there is more info on suspension i.e. springs and shocks and tire size which I understand has to do with choosing your gear ratio for whatever combination of all of those things you have , it could have been a small primer in the beginning of the book and really has nothing to do with actually rebuilding a differential and none of those things even matter if your not changing gear ratio and your just doing a stock rebuild ! the author Jefferson Bryant does not rebuild Differentials either he states that in the book ??? not sure if he has ever rebuilt 1 differential ? the little info that does have to do with rebuilding 10 & 12 bolts is very basic and very little detail or explanation ! the book should be called how to choose the right gear ratio (and some tips and tricks to do it) ! drop the mic ! your welcome you know where to send the checks !
The book is not what the title states. It jumps all over the place and never really tells you what you need to know about disassembly or reassembly. It has good information on identification of differentials but outside of that it's pretty much just a clutter of meaningless stuff. The author talks about suspension, checking wheel backspacing and history of gm differentials. I will need to buy another book on rebuilding differentials.
I had to review the book and now remember this book is all over the place, it goes into disassembly of the rear then to upgrading brakes then to removing the ring gear then choosing different types of suspension it makes it very hard to follow. I wish it had start to finish disassemble clean and build back up including setting the correct shims all in the same section the other info is valuable but very distracting when trying to follow it on a computer while doing the task.
Like others I found this book confusing. It jumps around and has pretty worthless info (why would anyone need a paragraph with pictures on how they cut the splines on a axle? And why an entire section on driveshafts and a different on on wheels and tires..... I bought this as I like the WorkbenchBooks but I am finding a hard time to see how this one would be useful to a newbie. A example of a great one is Muncie 4-Speed Transmissions: How to Rebuild & Modify by Paul Cangiolosi.
The book is good for the newbie, I found a couple of procedures out of order which could get somebody Pi**ed off . The books jumps around a little bit which could cause you to get confused if you never been inside a diffy .That's the reason for the 4star rating .It does cover other items such as how to make a tool to measure how fat a tire you can stuff under your car ,, drum brake converting to disk and some other handy info.
No so impressed. Based on the title, I expected more information and more depth. Some might find the addition of discussions on suspension and other semi related topics to be useful... but I really wanted the meat and potatoes, and more of them.
These other people are right. This is not a step by step book. Poor layout. Don't know why this guy through other material in with the process of what you're trying to achieve.
Ver informative for first-time rebuilds, but the book is laid out in a strange way, the chapters skip around a lot and it can be a little confusing.
